Lebensborn (Well of Life) A name given to a program organised by Heinrich Himmler, Head of the SS, for the purpose of transforming the German nation into a super race through selective breeding. The Nazi ideology emphasised the duty of the German women to bear racially sound children, unimportant if these children were born out of wedlock. Those women chosen were encouraged to become pregnant by SS men regarded as racially and politically desirable. After pregnancy the girls stayed at one of the special maternity centres, where they were given elaborate medical care.
